Ten Best Commandments/rules/tips for healthy life and Noni plant uses (WWO)

Saturday 28 February 2009

“According to the laws of nature, our bodies are in a state of wellness,” says Dr P I Peter, who offers wellness tips for healthy living

We live in a time when medical technology is growing by leaps and bounds. There is a solution for most physiological disorders. What if the need for going to a doctor for health disorders was preventable? This is not a possibility or a hypothetical situation but a reality that is being achieved by Dr P I Peter and the World Wellness Organization (WWO). WWO started out as the Empower India Movement in 2001, and eventually became the World Wellness Organization in 2006. The aim of WWO was to create a world that was full of wellness. Its mission is to create wellness awareness in one billion people by the year 2020.

The Ten Commandments
“According to the laws of nature, our bodies are in a state of wellness. When we begin to focus on illness, we only create a situation where none exists,” says Dr Peter, founder of WWO. The organization recommends a few things in order to achieve this natural state of being. A few simple commandments to follow in order to achieve this are:

  1. Exercise and meditate everyday
  2. Eat moderately
  3. Go vegetarian
  4. Drink two litres of water everyday
  5. Eat three hours before sleep
  6. Check what comes out of your mouth (your words) and what goes in to your mind
  7. Vibrate love
  8. Live an attitude of gratitude
  9. Manage stress
  10. Care for mother earth
These tips are relevant to our times, they teach us to not only watch what we do, but to also ensure that we lead lifestyles that emulated easily by any and every one. WWO also encourages that people learn these commandments, and pass on this knowledge to ten people. A simply pay-it-forward approach that will help WWO achieve its target by 2020.

A divine elixir
Apart from these commandments, WWO has a range of products that are designed to ensure that the body gets all the vital nutrients and is well on its way to wellness. The products that go under the label Noni are made entirely from the Noni plant. The plant is from the Rubiaceae family, better known as Indian Mulberry. The extracts from this are said to have 160 nutraceuticals, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. The plant is an adoptogen, i.e., it makes the body systems work at normal levels. This plant also has the properties of pain relief, stress relief, modulation of the immune system, building the body’s self-healing mechanism, managing body weight, etc. Noni is a cellular food, and the brand retails around 55 products including, cheese, jam, juice concentrate, meal substitute smoothie, juice, etc. The product is available in seven countries and in all major cities in India in the wellness stores. Maha Shivaratri - The great night of Shiva - Its Importance

Thursday 26 February 2009

The great night of Shiva – popularly called Maha Sivaratri is becoming one of the most celebrated festivals in the country and in several pockets of the world. It is the time when the energies of the conscious principle of our being are predominant in the atmosphere. On this day mediators sit upright, rather than lie down and go to sleep. In this position they align their thought to contemplate on the auspiciousness that is represented by the form of Shiva.

There are many explanations to the lore of Mahasivaratri – ranging from the utterly devout and religious framework to the more scientific and rational aspect of its celebrations. From a religious point of view, people offer their prayers in temples where special pujas are conduced al through the night, from 6 pm to 6 am. Mahasivaratri was recently celebrated in the country on February 23 in temples, home and as public gatherings with bhajans and satsanghs.Putting it in a very logical context, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, who founded the Isha Yoga Centre, says Mahasivarathri falls in February or March every year. “This night celebrates the Grace of Shiva, who is considered the Adi Guru from whom the Yogic tradition originates. The planetary positions on this night are such that, there is a powerful natural upsurge of energy in the human system. It is enormously beneficial to one’s physical and spiritual well being to stay awake and aware, throughout the night, “he says.

Just as all other deities in the pantheon of Hindu Gods, Shiva also represents an ideal. This ideal of a total connectedness of the individual consciousness to the cosmic consciousness, which is the supreme state of Yoga is represented by Shiva. The image of a deity is but like a map of India or the world map to give students a mental picture of what a deity is and qualities it stands for.

Meditating upon that idol or picture or chanting the name of Shiva as Om Namah Shivaya or Shambho Mahadeva, has the ability to connect the mind to the universe. The Yogic tradition has it that Shiva was the first teacher of Yoga and the first student was Parvathi, his consort. Mahasivaratri is almost a day of thanksgiving to a person who first taught the art of bringing the mind to rest and being alive to the present moment one hundred per cent.

The 86.4k Factor: Career Sutra (laws/guidelines/management tips)

Wednesday 25 February 2009

It’s time we start to work at achieving the levels of greatness we are truly capable of, using 86.4k as our sole capital

Almost every one of us wants to be rich. So , let’s assume that your bank account was credited worth Rs 86,400 ( 86.4k for short! ) every midnight with the pre-condition that if you didn’t spend the entire amount the same day, in 24 hours , the unused part/balance would ’evaporate’ at 11.59 pm that night. And at 12.00 am, a fresh remittance of 86.4k happens, only for the unused balance to ‘evaporate’ at 11.59 pm that night. What would you try and do? Wouldn’t you do all that is possible to spend all of the Rs 86.4k effectively?

If your answer is yes, my friend, start to think about this. Every day, our lives are credited with 86.4k seconds! It is all ours and there are no questions asked. The pre-condition, however, is the same. The onus is completely on us to ensure that we utilize it. Every single day the unused seconds perish and a new day of time credit, of 86.4k seconds, begins. And this is one fortune that is given to each of us uniformly, without our asking for it. What do we do with this abundant t resource /wealth available at our disposal? Really, simply, we squander it. The lack of supervision on this is probably the reason. If you look at it closely, this second, is valuable, only for this second! There is absolutely nothing you can do to infuse value into it after it lapses. We live in an environment where there is an incredible rat race all around us, characterized by an endless scramble to amass and control things, people and events. If you step back and think, you’ll know you are running this race because you too are mismanaging the world’s most democratic resource- TIME.

Why “democratic”, you may well ask? Because, everyone, right from Gandhi to Einstein to Obama to Tendulkar, to you and me, have had or continue to have only 86.4k seconds of time in a day. The 86.4k factor is the only constant in our lives. And now that we know we are all on the same level, isn’t it time we started to work at achieving the levels of greatness we are truly capable of , using 86.4k as our sole capital? We need to realize that our countdown in life started the moment we are born. And because we were not aware of this truth then, must not be a reason to postpone our recognition of the reality of that countdown happening even now. Be sure, none of us knows how far we have reached on our personal countdowns.

There is a very clear and pressing need for us to work towards prioritizing our day. Too often, we get caught up in the trap of answering the call of the urgent, thereby failing to address the things that truly are important in our lives. What you are not concentrating on while running the rat race, my friends, is what will truly matter in the end and will lend substance to your life. Even as we sit up in bed each morning, sleepily rubbing our eyelids, we need to carve out the day into tasks that are:
Important
Urgent
About envisioning the future: remember to set aside time for dreaming
About being nice to people: colleagues, friends and even strangers
About demonstrating care to the family and
Mundane/Routine

The need for demonstrating care and being nice to people have to be looked upon as special areas of focus, because a lot of us go through life without setting aside a few minutes to actually communicate to our loved ones that we care. Thomas Carlyle, the famed Scottish essayist married his secretary, and spent a lot of time with her, as their professional and personal lives overlapped, but never once did he tell her how much he loved her. On her passing, he went through her diaries and discovered from them how much she longed to be told so. For the fifteen remaining years of his life, he lived a nervous wreck never once forgiving himself for his folly.

Let this be a wakeup call to you. Life is a gift that comes as a multiple of 86.4k daily. Invest this invaluable resource wisely and reap the rewards that come with it. My dear friend, profit from life. Because that’s what life is all about!

Five tips to make your appraisal discussions a success

Making your performance review a success

  1. Ask questions – you should keep up the questions and press for details
  2. Tell your story – if you disagree with our boss’ assessment of your performance, ask if you can tell your side of the story.
  3. Play it by ear – it’s generally a good idea to discuss your future with your boss at your review. But if you’re overwhelmed by criticism of your performance, it may be better to save that for another day.
  4. Don’t sweat the small stuff – you don’t have to explain or discuss every minor improvement your boss thinks you could make
  5. Follow up - if you are surprised by a negative review and want some time to reflect before discussing it, ask your boss for more time. Your boss expects it. It’s better to say you want more time to think about everything that was discussed during the meting
However, if your rapport with your boss is great and you have managed your career and boss right, then you’ll not have any surprises at the meeting. It will just be a continuation of your earlier conversation regarding the expectations both of you have of your position , how you’re doing, and what you’re supposed to do in order to meet those expectations, etc.It makes sense to list your accomplishments, making them as quantifiable as period, say a year. You could send both lists to your boss prior to the assessment meeting. It is also wise to send him weekly updates, so that if you miss out on sending him those lists, he knows what’s going on and what to expect.

You should also ask yourself the question: why is your career important to you?
  • It pays all your bills. Without it, you couldn’t survive.
  • It is the source of your investments – retirement, college for your kids, and so on.
  • It helps you acquire other big assets like your home and cars.
  • It is the source of everything you have financially – the source of your net worth. For example, even if you want to save by spending less, you must have enough to meet all your requirements and then save enough. You will agree that even if you are a miser, you won’t be able to save anything if you don’t have a reasonable income.
There were four graduates who got jobs, each paying them Rs 1 lakh annually. The first did not do too well, and got a hike of only 3 percent . the second who did slightly better got a hike of 5 percent. The third who did pretty well managed a hike of 7 percent , while the forth did an excellent job and managed a 10 percent hike.

Don’t go by these percentages. They might seem small. Believe me, even a 2 percent rise makes a lot of difference in terms of actual money. So you see, you need to work really hard at what you do to make that difference in our output, so that the input rises proportionately.

Exam Stress:Keep it under control(Useful Tips)

Tuesday 24 February 2009

Ian Chamber, the CIE Region Manager South Asia for University of Cambridge International Examinations, offers some practical advice for students who go through the exam stress.

Exam stress is a perfectly natural response to what is very important event, but you must keep thing in perspective. Over-anxiety is unproductive, it makes for bad revision and bad exam performance. So how can you keep stress under control?

Good stress and bad stress
According to Ian, stress is not always a bad thing. It can keep you sharp, encourage you to study, and can help banish complacency. Don't try to control stress completely, but channel the energy it gives you into positive revision and good preparation. Recognize when you are feeling over-stressed and then step back.Learn to slow down
Ian advices students to close their eyes for few moments while breathing slowly and deeply, when stress levels rise. Wait for your thoughts to calm, and then take stock of the situation and carry on. A few moments are often all it takes to get back our perspective. Examiners often say, when commenting on student performance, that students will often answer the question they want to see, not the question on the exam paper. This is often caused by stress-of rushing to read the paper, grabbing at questions, and not slowing down enough to read things properly.

Take control
The feeling that things are going out of control often causes stress so you need to reverse this. If you are really struggling when revising certain subjects then get extra help, as early as possible. In the exam, if you don’t understand a particular question, or can’t remember the answer, simply move on and come back to that question later, when you might find that your under-standing has improved.

Set realistic goals
Don’t raise your stress levels further by setting yourself unrealistic targets, especially when you revise. Get to know your abilities, and your limitations, and aim to do the best you can. If you know that you revise best in short bursts, then don’t set yourself hours of continuous study every night.

A healthy diet
Diet can affect mood and energy levels, but it can affect stress levels as well. Many students consider caffeine- whether from tea, coffee, cola or even chocolate-essential to their revision routine. But too much can make you jumpy and nervous, and hamper concentration, exactly the opposite of what you want. Instead use sleep, exercise and fresh air to stimulate a tired brain.

All work and no play
Keep stress at bay, and keep things in perspective, by giving yourself some time t let of steam. Make sure you have at least one free evening a week, and use the time to do something completely different –play sport, visit the cinema, go out with friends. Your brain needs time to deal with all the information it has been processing, and you need time to relax and wind down.

Remember what you can do, not what you can’t
Stress often comes from a fear of failure, and dealing with possible failure is all part of setting realistic goals. In other words, don’t over-reach or set yourself up to fail. Know what you can do, and make sure can do this to the best of your ability on the day of the exam. If you are sitting more than one exam don’t let your performance in one session affect your performance in the next. It’s easy to think you did badly, when in fact you did as well as you could. If you revised effectively then you should feel confident in your ability.

Postures for health - Hatha Yoga(Pingala and Ida)

Monday 23 February 2009

Asana is a certain posture in which the body is placed with the help of various practices uniting breath with stretching and relaxing movements

Health is a natural state of wellness. There are many words to describe a diseased state of mind and body, but none to describe health. Hatha Yoga, is a practice of moving the body rhythmically, gracefully and yet with dynamic breathing in different postures. The idea is to stay for as long as one is comfortable in that particular posture.Introduced by Swatmarama in the 15th century in his compilation Hatha Yoga Pradipika - Hatha simply means harnessing the body that has a certain hatham or stiffness about it in its set patterns of behaviour and movement. The meaning usually is referred to stubborn behaviour especially of children in throwing tantrums and demanding what they want. Similarly, the body too throws tantrums. Hatha Yoga is the practice of providing a counter posture to every movement of the body, done comfortably and regularly evens out the energies in the body that get collected up on the wrong side leading to disease.

Asana is always understood as posture or the position in which the body is placed - it can be the posture of a crocodile, a bird, an animal, a tree or even a dead body. It is not the posture, but the body and mind comes to a state of total rest when in that posture. This ultimately needs to become a habit, so the two stay healthy and relaxed when not in that posture too.

Hatha also the two aspects of the human energy – namely the sun energy called Pingala and the Moon energy called Ida. If the Pingala is predominant the person is positive, aggressive, and active and can also turn restless. If the Ida is predominant then the person is mostly sleepy, tired and inactive. Practice of Hatha Yoga brings about a healthy balance of two. Hatha also means purification and it is a strong practice done for purification.

Traditional practice of
Hatha Yoga is a holistic path which includes moral discipline, physical and purification procedures, yogic breathing and meditation. In the west it is understood as a stress-reducing exercise.

Asana simply means seat – the same as you tell someone Aasan grahan keejiye, or “Please take your seat.” Here the understanding of seat is more subtle. By practice of Hatha Yoga regularly, the body and mind becomes settled in its own self or base and not moved by the worries of the past or anxieties of the future. Such a mind remains healthy by itself and also keeps the body in a state of good health. It is not given to excesses in food, speech or life style. These lead to good health ultimately. Asana simply means seat – where the mind is at complete rest and in tune with the body. Such a mind remains healthy by itself and also keeps the body in a state of good health. It is not given to excesses in food, speech or lifestyle.

Humanities Sciences - British and French Constitution

BRITISH PARLIAMENT:
A) There are three elements to Parliament: the Crown, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. These three components are separate from each other; no individual may be a part of more than one component. Members of the House of Lords are legally barred from voting in elections for members of the House of Commons; the Sovereign by convention does not vote, although there is no statutory impediment.

CROWN:
A) As an institution the Crown is still powerful, as Royal Assent is still required for all Bills to become law, through prerogative powers. The prerogative powers include among others the abilities to dissolve and summon Parliament, make treaties, declare war, and award honours. (write the four points)
In practice these are always exercised by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister and the other ministers of the government. The monarch also chooses the Prime Minister. This is usually a straightforward decision, though occasionally the monarch has to make a judgment.UPPER HOUSE:
A1) The whole House is formally styled The Right Honourable The Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament Assembled
The Lords Spiritual and Lords Temporal are considered separate "estates," but they sit, debate and vote together.
A2) These always include the incumbents of the "five great sees", namely the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of York, the Bishop of London, the Bishop of Durham and the Bishop of Winchester. The remaining 21 Lords Spiritual are the most senior diocesan bishops, ranked in order of consecration.

HOUSE OF COMMONS:
A) Each "Member of Parliament" or "MP" is chosen by a single constituency according to the First-Past-the-Post electoral system.
B) Government ministers (including the Prime Minister) must regularly answer questions in the House of Commons and there are a number of select committees that scrutinise particular issues and the workings of the government.

CABINET:
A) Cabinet is a formal body composed of the most senior government ministers (consultative group) chosen by the Prime Minister. (PM must be someone who can command a majority in the House of Commons). Most members are heads of government departments with the title "Secretary of State". Formal members of the Cabinet are drawn exclusively from the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
B) The monarch uses royal prerogative powers to appoint and dismiss members of Cabinet. The monarch exercises these powers in accordance with the Prime Minister's advice.
C) Individual ministerial responsibility is the convention that in their capacity as head of department, a minister is responsible for the actions, and therefore the failings too, of their department.
D) Cabinet collective responsibility means that members of the cabinet make decisions collectively, and are therefore responsible for the consequences of these decisions collectively. Therefore, when a vote of no confidence is passed in Parliament, every minister and government official drawn from Parliament is expected to resign from the executive. So, logically, cabinet ministers who disagree with major decisions are expected to resign, as, to take a recent example, Robin Cook did over the decision to attack Iraq in 2003.

JUDICIARY:
A) The United Kingdom does not have a single, unified judicial system, but separate judicial systems serving England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

FRENCH GOVERNMENT:
A) The government of France is a semi-presidential system determined by the French Constitution of the fifth Republic, in which the nation declares itself to be "an indivisible, secular, democratic, and social Republic". The constitution provides for a separation of powers

FIRST REPUBLIC
B) The First Republic in France, officially the French Republic was proclaimed in 1792, during the French Revolution. On that day Louis XVI was formally deposed, ending the French monarchy. This presaged a new era of republican government in Europe.
The Republic officially lasted until the establishment of the First French Empire in 1804. Its leaders included Napoleon Bonaparte, who served as First Consul from 1799 to 1804, when he ended the republic by declaring himself Emperor Napoleon I.

SECOND REPUBLIC
The French Second Republic was the republican government of France between the 1848 Revolution and the coup by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte which initiated the Second Empire. It officially adopted the motto Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. The Second Republic witnessed the tension between the "Social and Democratic Republic" and a liberal form of Republic, which exploded during the June Days Uprising of 1848.

THIRD REPUBLIC
The French Third Republic (1870-10 July 1940) was the political regime of France between the Second French Empire and the Vichy Regime. It was a republican parliamentary democracy that was created following the collapse of the Empire of Napoleon III in the Franco-Prussian War. It survived until the invasion of France by the German Third Reich in 1940

FOURTH REPUBLIC
The Fourth Republic was the republican government of France between 1946 and 1958, governed by the fourth republican constitution. It was in many ways a revival of the Third Republic, which was in place before World War II, and suffered many of the same problems. Some attempts were made to strengthen the executive branch of government, to prevent the unstable situation that had existed before the war, but the instability remained and the Fourth Republic saw frequent changes in government.

FIFTH REPUBLIC
The Fifth Republic is the fifth and current republican constitution of France, which was introduced in 1958. The Fifth Republic emerged from the collapse of the French Fourth Republic, replacing a parliamentary government with a semi-presidential system.

PRESIDENT:
A) Given France's runoff voting system, this means that the presidential candidate is required to obtain a nationwide majority of non-blank votes at either the first or second round of balloting, which presumably implies that the president is somewhat supported by at least half of the voting population; this gives him considerable legitimacy.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT:
A) The Constitution also sets out methods for its own amendment either by referendum or through a Parliamentary process with Presidential consent. The normal procedure of constitutional amendment is as follows: the amendment must be adopted in identical terms by both houses of Parliament, then must be either adopted by a simple majority in a referendum, or by 3/5 of a joint session of both houses of Parliament (the French Congress)

Syndicalism

A movement that advocates direct action by the working class to abolish the capitalist
order, including the state, and to establish in its place a social order based on
workers organized in production units. The syndicalist movement flourished in France
chiefly between 1900 and 1914 and had a considerable impact in Spain, Italy, England,
the Latin-American countries, and elsewhere. It had ceased to be a strong, dynamic
force by the end of World War I, but it remained a residual force in Europe until
World War II.

Syndicalism is a type of movement which aims to degrade capitalist societies through
action by the working class on the industrial front. For syndicalists, labor unions
are the potential means both of overcoming capitalism and of running society in the
interests of the majority. Industry and government in a syndicalist society would be
run by labour union federations. This emphasis on industrial organization was a distinguishing feature of syndicalism when it began to be identified as a distinct current at the beginning of the 20th century. Most socialist organisations of that period emphasised the importance of political action through party organizations as a means of bringing about socialism. Although all syndicalists emphasize industrial organization, not all reject political action altogether. For example, De Leonists and some other Industrial Unionists advocate parallel organisation both politically and industrially.

Syndicalisme is a French word meaning "trade unionism". This milder version of syndicalism was overshadowed by revolutionary anarcho-syndicalism in the early 20th century, which was most powerful in Spain, but also appeared in other parts of the world, as in the US-centered Industrial Workers of the World.

In a model syndicalist community, the local syndicate communicates with other syndicates through the Bourse de Travail (labour exchange), which manages and transfers commodities.

Syndicalism is one of the three most common ideologies of egalitarian, pre-managed economic and labour structure, together with socialism and communism. It states, on an ethical basis, that all participants in an organized trade internally share equal ownership of its production and therefore deserve equal earnings and benefits within that trade, regardless of position or duty. By contrast, socialism emphasises distributing output among trades as required by each trade, not necessarily considering how trades organize internally. Syndicalism is compatible with privatism, unlike communism. Communism rejects government-sanctioned private ownership and private earnings in favor of making all property legally public, and therefore directly and solely managed by the people themselves. In Syndicalism, unions are the basis for the future society rather than simply means of attaining that society.

Syndicalists often form alliances with other workers' movements, including socialism, communism, and anarchism.
